Pragmatics and Semantics
Many of the current pragmatics theories based on philosophy focus on semantics. Brandom, for example is focused on the meaning of words (albeit from a pragmatic perspective).
Others adopt a more holistic perspective on pragmatics, such as relevance theory, which attempts to explore the understanding processes involved in an utterance made by a listener. This method tends to overlook other aspects of pragmatics, like epistemic discussions on truth.
What is pragmatism, exactly?
Pragmatism offers an alternative to continental philosophy and analytic philosophy. It was developed by Charles Sanders Peirce and expanded by his colleague and friend William James, and later developed by Josiah Royce. It had a profound effect on areas of inquiry from theology of philosophy to philosophy of science as well as ethics, politics and philosophy of language. The pragmatist tradition continues to develop.
The pragmatic maxim is at the center of classical pragmatics. It is a principle that clarifies the meaning of hypotheses through their 'practical implications' or their implications for the experiences of specific situations. This gives rise to an epistemological view that is a kind of 'inquiry-based epistemology' and an anti-Cartesian interpretation of the rules that govern inquiry. The early pragmatists generally disagreed on the issue of whether pragmatism can think of itself as a scientific philosophy that is based on a monism regarding truth (following Peirce), or a broad-based alethic pluralism (James and Dewey).
One of the major concerns for philosophers of the pragmatist tradition is understanding knowledge. Some pragmatists, such as Rorty are likely to be skeptical of knowledge based on a foundation of 'immediate experiences. Others, such as Peirce or James are skeptical of the correspondence theory which asserts that the most authentic beliefs are those that accurately represent reality.
Other issues in pragmatism include the relationship between reality and beliefs and the nature of human rationality, the importance of virtues and values, and the meaning of life. Pragmatists have also come up with a wide variety of ideas and methods in fields such as semiotics and philosophy of language, philosophy of religion as well as philosophy of science, ethics, and theology. Some, such as Peirce and Royce are epistemological relativists, whereas others believe that such relativism is completely wrong. The 20th century was marked by the resurgence of interest in classical pragmatics. This led to a myriad of new developments. This includes the concept of a "near-side" pragmatics which is concerned with the resolution of ambiguity, indexicals, demonstratives, and anaphors as well as the "far-side" pragmatics that examines the semantics of discourses.
What is the connection between what is said and what happens?
Semantics and Pragmatics are often viewed as being on opposite ends of a continuum, with semantics on the close side and pragmatics on the other. Carston for instance, argues that there are at least three main types of modern pragmatics people who view it as a philosophy along the lines of Grice or others who focus on its interaction with grammar and those who are concerned with the interpretation of utterances. Near-side pragmatics encompasses issues like the resolution of ambiguity, the use of proper names, indexicals, demonstratives, anaphoras, pragmatickr and presupposition. It is also believed to encompass problems that require definite descriptions.
What is the relation between pragmatics and semantics?
Pragmatics is the study of meaning within language placed within context. It is a component of linguistics that examines the way that people utilize language to convey various meanings. It is often compared with semantics, which examines the literal meaning of words within sentences or in larger chunks of speech.
The relationship between pragmatism and semantics is a complex one. The most important distinction is that pragmatics considers other factors than the literal meaning of words, like the intended meaning and context in which an utterance was spoken. This gives a more naive understanding of the meaning of an expression. Semantics also focuses on the relationship between words, while pragmatics is more concerned with the relationships between interlocutors (people who are engaged in a conversation) and their contextual features.
In recent years, neopragmatism has focused heavily on the philosophy of metaphilosophy and language. This has largely left behind the metaphysics of classical pragmatism and value theory. Some neopragmatists, however, are working on developing a metaethics based on the concepts of classical pragmatism regarding pragmatics and experiences.
Charles Sanders Peirce, William James and others were among the first to develop classical pragmatism. Both were influential thinkers and published a number of books. Their writings are still popular to this day.
While pragmatism is a viable alternative to the analytic and continental philosophical mainstream, it isn't without critics. Certain philosophers, for instance have claimed that deconstructionism isn't an original philosophical concept and that pragmatism simply represents an expression.
In addition to these critics, the pragmatism of the past was challenged by technological and scientific developments. For instance, pragmatists struggled to reconcile their views on science with the development of evolutionary theory, which was developed by a non-pragmatist, Richard Dawkins.
Despite these challenges, pragmatic method continues to gain popularity around the world. It is a third option to Continental and analytic philosophical traditions, and has a wide range of practical application. It is a rapidly growing area of inquiry, with numerous schools of thought forming and incorporating pragmatism's principles into their own philosophical framework.
